Job Overview

In today’s reality in urban informal settlements where hundreds of women and children are affected by a myriad of challenges, there is an urgent need to invest in uninterrupted maternal and newborn health care. CPN has been implementing maternal and child health projects in Mathare informal settlements and is currently rethinking how we can reach more young women and girls with simple, cost-effective, proven solutions. CPN has had experience in using care group in urban informal settlements to strengthen community health systems for the delivery of essential maternal and newborn care. This role has been created due to the growth in the project portfolio and the identification of intervention gaps in psychosocial support. We are seeking an organized and passionate psychosocial counselor to support Community Maternal and Child Health project in an urban informal settlement context in Nairobi. As a project officer, this position will work closely with other team members will be responsible for leading individual and group counseling sessions for CPN MCH project participants. The position holder will facilitate psychoeducation training for CPN staff, program participants, and community members on mental health topics. The position holder must be proficient in conducting assessments and data collection, and comfortable with reporting data internally

Major Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of professional, effective, and appropriate psychosocial programming, including direct individual and group counseling support, and expanded mental health services. 
  • Provide professional and confidential one-on-one and group counseling services to individuals with personal and social challenges such as conflict, parenting, sexual and gender-based violence, death/grief, perinatal depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. 
  • Lead mental health awareness raising and/or sensitization campaigns among participants in the community and within the organization 
  • Co-facilitate training on maternal and child heath behavior change communication and psychoeducation. 
  • Participate in and contribute to the development and roll-out of maternal and child health curriculum with modules on maternal mental health 
  • Compile monthly and quarterly counseling reports on the referred cases, including analysis of behavioral trends and patterns and the identified solutions. 
  • Lead psychological assessments for clients, assist with data collection on psychosocial activities, and maintain records and databases with the utmost integrity and confidentiality. 
  • Undertake referrals to partner organizations as appropriate. 
  • Participate in routine departmental work plan reviews and assist with preparing relevant reports for management and funders. 

Job Requirements Essential

  • Community Diploma in Counseling Studies from a recognized university or 
  • Diploma in Social work and Development (KNEC). 
  • Registered member of a recognized body of counselors and psychologists
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience working in a not-for-profit organization
  • Excellent command of English and Kiswahili. 
  • Confident user of Microsoft and google suit 

Desirable

  • Be a Christian
  • Aged 30 and above
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology. 
  • Prior experience working in an urban informal settlement 
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and other child protection policies and protocols

Job Overview

One of the mandates of KMC-CPN is to reimagine, reconcile and restore peace and love to our broken bodies and in our communities. To execute this, CPN is implementing a peace project in Mathare and Eastleigh communities with the goal of bridging the gap between Muslims and Christians by encouraging Christians and Muslim students and youths to utilize nonviolent strategies of conflict prevention, resolution, and transformation relationships s by initiating peace clubs and talent nurturing activities to explore different cultures and faiths and helping each other to appreciate the diversity of faith and cultures that we have. To implement this the project is looking for a talented, passionate, self-driven and innovative person with experience in peacebuilding, mediation and conflict transformation to help develop skills that will support people to build peace in schools and communities that we are targeting.

Major Responsibilities

  • Facilitate awareness creation and sensitization of communities in Peace Building
  • Build capacity through training and mentorship on the collection of conflict-relevant data, conflict analysis and the design and implementation of responses to prevent violence
  • Participate in staff devotions
  • Promote good stewardship and high accountability through efficient and economical utilization of resources in the project 
  • Track and monitor project progress against set objectives, timeline and budget.
  • Develop regular monthly, quarterly and annual Peace Building reports
  • Facilitate communities to fully participate in project activities for enhanced community ownership and sustainability of the Peace Building program through sports, cultural events
  • Perform any other responsibilities that may be assigned by your supervisor from time to time

Job Requirements Essential

  • Diploma or a degree in Peace-Building, Sociology, International Relations, Conflict studies, or other related fields.
  • 3 years of field experience working with Communities in Peace project management in an NGO context.
  • Refined training and facilitation skills, especially in cross-cultural urban environments; 
  • Proven analytical, problem-solving skills and ability to work under minimal supervision; 
  • Skills in community mobilization, training, and team-building; 
  • Highly organized, efficient, and able to meet deadlines; 
  • Proficient in MS-Word, Microsoft Excel, and email/internet programs; and must have excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills

Desirable

  • Be a Christian
  • General understanding of project management and MEAL techniques. 
  • Ability to work in and contribute to a team 
  • Ability to work with different partners, local authorities, local organizations and NGOs, to develop and maintain positive relationships.
