Since the outbreak of Covid-19, CPN with support from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC-Kenya) and ministry of health joined the battle against the disease at the community level. This was done by setting up 50 handwashing stations in Mathare 3A, 3B, 3C and Village 2, distribution of mask, gloves and sanitizers to community health volunteers(CHV) who are the front runners in prevention of spread of the virus in the community. The community health volunteers sensitized the community on how to stay safe from the disease according to the WHO standards. They shared information on signs and symptoms and were always available to activate referrals in case of a suspected case.
The project engaged the community in management of the hand washing stations where the community members were responsible for supplying water and safe keeping of the station. The project supplied them with soap making materials and they locally made liquid soap that was used for hand washing in the stations. The community members have since owned the intervention and together were working to flatten the curve in Mathare community.
